As a Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter, it is our goal to inform and involve the individuals and organizations of the UH campus under a common goal to make a difference in our community and in the world.
One of UH Habitat’s main functions is to build houses in partnership with the local affiliate, Houston Habitat for Humanity. To fulfill this goal, the Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter at UH is proposing to provide an affordable home for a low-income Houston family. This project called the Coogs’ House Project will not only provide a family with a home, but it will also give students, faculty, and supporters a chance to participate and contribute to this project.
The students of the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture have spent a rigorous summer designing three different homes for Coogs’ House that expresses “an affordable home does not have to sacrifice aesthetics.” Thoughtful design can result in an affordable, enjoyable, and sustainable house. The students received real life experiences as they worked with Houston Habitat as their clients throughout the whole process. As the project continues to develop, more and more students will be involved.
This would continue to enhance the educational aspects by providing students an opportunity for hands-on experiences and added value of applying their individual knowledge and talents through a real life project.
The Coogs’ House, as with other Habitat houses, will be purchased by a selected partner family at a low cost and financed with affordable no-interest mortgage. In addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage, homeowners invest 300 ‘sweat equity’ hours of their own labor into building their own home as well as other families’ homes.
The Campus Chapter at UH wants to engage as many students, faculty, staff, alumni, supporters and members of our community as possible as we complete the Coogs’ House Project. We will also partner with other student organizations to fundraise and generate donations.
